Fuchsia magellanica

Hummingbird Fuchsia, Hardy Fuchsia

For variety in shady areas, gardeners value Fuchsia's huge array of sizes, shapes and colors of flowers. Two-toned blooms -- gracefully pendant single or frilly double flowers -- have petals in shades of pink, coral, red, purple and white. Use upright-growing Fuchsias as shrubs or bedding plants, or train them into a tree-like form. Trailing varieties are excellent for containers and hanging baskets. Grown as evergreen to semi-deciduous shrubs in warm winter areas, can also be grown as annual house plants over winter. Plants thrive in cool, partial shade. Mist frequently where summers are hot and dry. Protect from strong winds. In spring, feed them high nitrogen fertilizer to encourage the new growth which produces flowers. High potassium fertilizer in summer encourages continuous bloom. Grow new plants easily from 2- to 3-inch stem tip cuttings. Watch for fuchsia gall mite, spider mites and white flies.
