Furcraea selloa marginata
| These handsome succulents resemble their Agave cousins, but do better in humid regions. The leaves of two species, Furcraea foetida and Furcraea haxapatela, yield long, soft fibers used for twine, sacks and hammocks. True tropicals, they make fine conservatory plants in cooler climates. Grow them for their strong sculptural forms. The rare flower stalks are spectacular, but the plant dies after blooming. Even the flowers seldom produce seed. Instead, many bulbuls form on the flower stalks, then fall to the ground and take root. They prefer full sun and need well-drained fertile soil with excellent drainage. Water moderately, they are fairly drought-tolerant. Keep above 43º F. Look for variegated forms with cream or yellow markings and edges. |
Cream-colored on new leaves, the contrasting edges deepen over time to a rich yellow. The dense rosette of leaves, armed with hard, brown ¼-inch spines, grows at ground level or on a very short stem.
