Garrya elliptica

Coast Silktassel, Silktassel

Long, drooping clusters of greenish-white flowers decorate this evergreen shrub. Plant male and female shrubs close together and females will produce clusters of purple fruit that attract birds. Use as a screen or hedge. While Garrya elliptica tolerates coastal conditions, Garrya freemontii better tolerates drought, heat and cold. Start from cuttings. Flowers on male plants are larger. All flowers grow on the previous year's growth, so prune carefully. Difficult to transplant once in the ground.
