This large, irregularly shaped tree's translucent, fanlike leaves offer dappled shade. Its leaves are found in ancient fossils, dating to the Jurassic period. Light green spring leaves turn bright yellow in autumn. When male and female trees grow close together, females produce yellowish fruits that smell awful when they break open. To avoid odorous fruits, plant males only. Trees' widths are usually 1/2 to 2/3 their height. Use singly in lawns or as street trees. Stake young trees so they will grow straight trunks.

Leaves are deeply cut like those on maidenhair ferns. Tolerates heat, air pollution, salt and coastal conditions. Resists pests and disease, including oak root fungus. Rarely needs pruning.
