Delightful and well-named, their small branching stems form a mat of fleshy tongue-shaped leaves. Species and varieties offer spotted, knobby, or purplish leaves. The bright yellow flowers look like dandelions; Glottiphyllum parvifolium's reach 3 inches across. Grow in a well-drained, low-fertility soil. Too much water can be fatal; they grow bright-green, water-logged leaves that scar and rot in winter cold. Water only in hot weather, and keep totally dry from late summer to mid-spring, protecting from rainfall. Potted plants make this job easier. Cuttings root easily and remain true to the species, while seeds tend to hybridize. May be susceptible to mealybugs. |

Most Glottiphyllums offered by nurseries are hybrids of this best-known species. Glossy, fresh green leaves arc upward from creeping stems. Golden-yellow flowers grow to 3 inches across.
