Helichrysum bracteatum
Golden Everlasting, Yellow Paper Daisy
This group includes perennial low shrubs and plants grown for their leaves and used in bedding, containers and borders. The annuals, such as the commonly planted Strawflower, are mainstays for dried arrangements. Both are excellent for hot, sunny locations, as they need little water once established and require good drainage. Strawflower blooms look like small, brightly-colored Sunflowers. Use standard, tall varieties in cutting gardens, as they tend to be leggy and are not good-looking garden plants. Dwarf varieties, 10 to 12 inches high, bloom in many colors including red, pink, yellow and white. Start Strawflowers from seed sown in the ground, uncovered, as they need light to germinate. For dried arrangements, harvest when flowers are fully open, then hang upside down in a cool, dry place out of direct sunlight. |

Who could resist dwarf strains with names like Bright Bikinis Mixture, Dwarf Hot Bikini and Dwarf Spangle Mix? Taller choices include Tall Splendid Mix and Swiss Giants. Good in fresh arrangements.
