Heteromeles arbutifolia

Toyon, Christmas Berry

The single species of evergreen native California shrub in this group put the "holly" in Hollywood. Heteromeles arbutifolia has thick, leathery, glossy, toothed leaves like the real Holly. Its large flat clusters of fragrant white flowers are followed by red-orange, hollylike berries that last through the fall and winter. The berries attract birds. As a single or multi-stemmed specimen or hedge it offers some fire protection on dry hills. Its dense roots control erosion on banks. Drought-resistant, it tolerates some water. However, do not overwater. Plant 6 feet apart in full sun or partial shade for an effective screen. Prune in early spring for compact plant. Prone to fire blight.
