| For sweet spring fragrance, a gardener's thoughts turn to Hyacinths. Hardy bulbs, flower clusters bloom in a variety of colors. Plant them with other spring bulbs and grow them in containers outdoors or indoors. You can force bulbs to bloom in winter by starting them indoors. In cold winter climates, plant in early fall. In warmer areas, plant mid-fall to early winter. Prevent bulb rot with excellent drainage and no fertilizer. Protect emerging plants from late spring frosts with mulch, hay, or other covering. Bulbs grown for a second year will not flower as well. In warmer climates, hyacinths may not receive enough cold chilling and should be discarded and replanted with new bulbs. |
