One of the most popular exotic imports in Southern California, this single species of leafy garden shrub or street tree boasts 8-inch-long clusters of 2-inch-long blue to violet flowers. Its crowded fernlike leaflets on 1½- to 2-foot-long leaves give foliage an airy look. Disk-shaped seed pods are used in dried flower arrangements. Fast-growing, older trees reach 50 feet tall and wide. Prune in early spring to form single trunk. Prefer sunny location and sandy, well-drained, acid soil. Protect brittle branches from high winds. Grown in subtropical areas outdoors or in containers in temperate greenhouses. Not frost tolerant below 27º F.

Sometimes sold as J. acutifolia, it blooms from late spring to late summer. A white-flowered variety blooms longer and has lusher foliage, but fewer flowers.
