Kalopanax septemlobus

Prickly Castor Oil Tree, Kalopanax pictus, Castor arailia

These tropical-looking Asian natives are hairy or spiny. Older trees are mostly thornless. Both are grown as shade trees for their large, lush, simple leaves. Their white flowers bloom in large, ball-shaped clusters, which are sometimes hidden by the leaves. Small black berries attract birds. Resistant to disease and insect problems. They thrive in full sun and deep moist soil. Water deeply to reach all of their long root structure. Prune in spring.
