Kniphofia uvaria 'Pfitzer Hybrids'

Red Hot Poker, Common Torch Lily, Tritoma

Of the 60 to 70 known species, only Kniphofia uvaria is available in nurseries. Native to Africa, Poker Plants are grown for their unusual spire-like, bicolor flowers which change color as they open from the bottom up. Easy to grow, the foliage is a dense, grassy clump. Seedlings, including those with dwarf habits, are available in various heights and colors. Put in informal plantings with other drought-tolerant perennials and shrubs. Poker plants are available in containers from spring on. Cold climate gardeners must mulch heavily, or lift and store the plants in a cool cellar for winter. Grows easily from seeds or divide for new plants.
