Lactuca sativa 'Salad Bowl'

Lettuce

One of the quickest and easiest vegetables to grow, lettuce thrives in cool, moist weather. Varieties include Iceberg, Green or Red Leaf, tender Boston or Bibb, and upright crisp Romaine. Leaf types are easier to grow than head lettuce which goes to seed in hot weather. Needs full sun or part shade in warm weather. Plant among taller vegetables such as Onions or Broccoli. Fill in with lettuce seedlings after other vegetables are harvested. Sow seeds at 2-week intervals starting in early spring until 1½ to 2 months before hot weather starts. For fall harvest, sow in late summer and early fall. Grown almost year-round in warm winter climates. Harvest leaf lettuce leaf-by-leaf or as entire plants. Harvest Boston lettuce once loose heads form, and head lettuce after heads are firm.
