| The long twining stems of this lovely evergreen climber bear the national flower of Chile. Nodding, 3-inch rosy red bells, often spotted with white, have a heavy, waxy appearance, bloom off and on from late spring into autumn. Named cultivars include Flesh Pink, Nash Court Pink with darker marbling, brilliant crimson Superba, deep red-flowering Beatrice Anderson, and dark red Penheale. Outdoor plants do best in a frost-free climate, but will survive frost above 23º F if protected by surrounding plants and a sunny south-facing wall. Give light shade, with at most only brief direct sunlight. Needs high humidity, moderate summer temperatures and shelter from wind. Plant in moist, humus-rich, lime-free soil, adding peat moss or bark for excellent drainage. Good in a conservatory. Layer spring or fall. or grow from seed presoaked 48 hours before sowing. Watch for snails and slugs. |
