The spiky flowers are usually purple or lavender, but there are white and pink forms. Grown in herb or Mediterranean-style gardens as hedges or edging, these gray-green shrubs need little care or water. Good companion plant to Cistus, Helianthemum, Nepeta, Santolina, and others that grow in similar conditions. Shear back flower stalks when blooms die. Where Lavenders do not overwinter, grow them in containers that can be brought indoors during the cold period. Because they seed themselves freely and cross-breed with other plants, new varieties appear often. |
This fine variety's flowers bloom late in the season. Ungainly growth can be pruned back, but most plants need replacing after 10 years.
