Leucodendron argenteum

These evergreen shrubs or small trees from South Africa are grown outdoors only in California. Some types have male conelike flower clusters with colorful bracts. Female flowers, which grow on separate plants, are less colorful. Leaves are leathery. Prefers acid soil, but tolerates neutral or somewhat alkaline conditions. Requires good drainage.

The gray leaves of this young tree are densely covered with silky, silvery hairs. Grows upright, then spreads to irregular shapes with age. Tolerates coastal conditions.
