Leucospermum reflexum

Bright solitary or clustered flowers show off on these evergreen shrubs from South Africa. Hairy leathery leaves crowd their stems. Tubelike flowers grow in a thistle-shaped head and make excellent cut flowers. Bloom is in late winter or early spring. Fruit is a small whitish nut. Difficult to cultivate, these plants need just the right growing conditions. Plant in full sun on slopes with excellent drainage. Most prefer acid soil. Protect from drying winds. Young plants are especially tender, though well-established plants tolerate some frost. Grow smaller types in containers.
Leucospermum reflexum
Its orange-rose flowers contrast with gray, fuzzy leaves.
