| Under semi-shady trees, these native, deciduous or evergreen shrubs add brightness with hanging clusters of flowers. The white to pink, urn-shaped flowers sit beneath glossy 7-inch leaves. Plant in masses to best display their bronze- or burgundy-tinted winter foliage. Stays small, so good for covering a house foundation. Leaves and nectar are poisonous. Use also in borders, in the front of evergreen plantings or in water gardens. Likes acid, moist soil, buy tolerates drought once established. Branches of blooms make good cut flowers. Start seeds indoors, and transplant seedlings after weather has warmed, or by division or cuttings. Remove old branches to maintain vigorous growth. Protect from harsh cold. |
