Leymus secalinus

Lyme Grass, Elymus arenarius 'Glaucus', Blue Lyme Grass

Tough and invasive, these bluish grasses cover bare areas quickly and are especially well-suited to coastal and beach settings. Most grow 2 to 3 feet high, though one California native, Leymus condensatus (Giant Wild Rye) may reach nearly 9 feet tall. Containers keep them under control, showcasing their dense growth and distinctive flower stalks that rise 1 to 2 feet above the leaf blades. Many are still erroneously classified as Elymus. The compant Leymus arenarius Findhorn Grows just 1 foot high. Compact forms may also be less aggressive. Spreads by rhizomes. Most are drought-resistant, but some need water in summer. Encourage fresh summer growth by shearing leaves before flowering.
