Lunaria annua

Honesty

Famous even in Shakespeare's time, their round, silvery seed pods which appear in winter attract more attention than their violet or white, often fragrant, spring flowers. Used in dried arrangements, the pods remain on the stems after leaves and flowers are gone. These tough, easy to grow plants reach 1½ to 3 feet high and have heart-shaped, sawtoothed-edged leaves. Likes sandy, damp, shady places. Self-sows, so can become invasive. Called Honesty because the seeds can be seen through the translucent pods. Start from seed.
