Grown for their dramatic foliage, the flowers are insignificant compared to the large blue-green leaves. When they reach 7 or 8 feet tall, you can see the powdery white undersides of the lobed leaves. Keep an eye on this plant as it spreads rapidly in moist areas. Buy in containers or divide for new plants.

Of the two species commonly grown, many people prefer this less-invasive one to the similar macleaya microcarpa. Flowers are not showy, but its large size gives it a dramatic effect. Does not need staking.
