Malvaviscus arboreus arboreus

Wax Mallow

Thriving in the southern United States and California, these 3 species of tropical shrubs can become vinelike. Bright red, funnel-shaped blooms with long stamens are followed by colorful berries. Leaves secrete a white waxy substance that forms sticky grains on foliage. Somewhat drought-tolerant if planted in shaded areas. Plant in light soil with fibrous peat and loam. Prune to control shape. Prone to aphids.
