Maytenus boaria

Mayten Tree

The most frequently grown type of these leather-leaved evergreen shrubs and trees is Maytenus boaria. It is a Willowlike tree, without the Willow's problems. It tolerates most soils, but requires good drainage. Drought-tolerant once established, but best with some supplemental water. Resists oak root fungus. Stake young trees. Deep watering allows roots to grow deep and non-invasive. Do not disturb roots, or they will sucker.
