| These rugged, fast-growing evergreen trees tolerate coastal conditions, heat, drought and alkaline soils. As they mature, their bark becomes gnarled and peels in layers. Because clusters of the small flowers look like long, circular brushes, these trees are sometimes called bottlebrushes. Their flowers attract birds. Woody seed capsules follow the flowers. Narrow leaves are mostly needlelike. Use smaller trees as screens and larger ones as shade trees. Thin their canopy to highlight branches and bark. Cut back to side branches, but do not shear. |
With age, this large shrub to small tree develops interesting twisted branches. A good accent plant, it blooms in large crimson-red flowers over a long period.
