Honey Bush

Use these strongly scented evergreen shrubs where winters are warm and frost-free. Most are from South Africa, where they are used in medicine. Masses of nectar-bearing flowers secrete honey, though they are chiefly prized for their foliage. Widely used as a landscape plant in Southern California, they have an unpleasant odor when bruised. Tolerate most soils. Drought-tolerant once established. Prune in early spring before new growth begins, for height. In colder areas, mulch heavily to keep plants from dying back to the ground.

These fast-growing, multi-trunked shrubs have grayish green, palm-like leaves that reach 1 foot long. Plant against walls for the shadow effect of branches and leaves. Small reddish brown flowers on long spikes are followed by papery decorative seedpods.
