Metasequoia glyptostroboides

Dawn Redwood, Chinese Redwood

The only type grown is Metasequoia glyptostroboides, a relic from the Jurassic period. It was only known from fossils until its discovery in 1944. It is now widely available in nurseries. It is among the few conifers to drop its colorful fall foliage. Locate to accomodate its large size. Grows faster in mild climates. Protect from cold winter winds and hot, dry summer winds. Do not plant in low, frosty areas where late-season growth may be damaged.

Similar in appearance to the Coast Redwood, it has fine textured, green needlelike leaves. The leaves turn a pink-brown in fall, dropping to reveal the red-brown trunks of older trees. Use in lawns.
