Nerine bowdenii

These members of the Amaryllis family are prized for their exotic flowers and as one of the few types of autumn- or early winter-blooming bulbs. Up to 20 red to white broad-petaled, funnel-shaped, or spidery-shaped flowers top their 1- to 3-foot-tall solid stalks. Hybrid varieties have showiest flowers. The strap-shaped leaves develop during winter, dying down from May to August. Difficult to find and grow, these are not cold-hardy. Grow in cool greenhouses or plant near a sheltering wall outdoors in Zone 9. Best when bulbs are in crowded conditions. Do not disturb roots. Water and feed liquid manure until leaves yellow and die back. Then let bulbs rest a few months. After several years, divide or buy new plants.

Eight to 12 musky scented flowers top its stem. The blooms are 3 inches long with wavy margins. Keep soil moist.
