Nolina recurvata

Bottle Palm, Elephant Tree, Pony Tail

Relatives of Yuccas and Century Plants, their trunks are usually swollen at the base, tapering to a spiky head of narrow, fibrous, grassy blades. The leaf edges and tips often split. Thick, corky bark protects the trunk. They bloom only at an advanced age, producing hanging clusters of tiny, creamy, mauve-blushed flowers. Adapting well to life indoors, their dramatic form makes an impressive accent. They do well outdoors only in sunny, frost-free desert and semi-desert regions. Though they tolerate extensive drought once established, they appreciate regular water in summer. Water sparingly in winter. Grow from seed or offsets in spring.
