Ostrya knowltonii
Western Hop Hornbeam
Prized for its green, hoplike fruit clusters that appear in autumn, these deciduous trees are easily cultivated in good soil. Cold hardy and slow-growing, their slender spreading branches form a round open crown. Between its bright green toothed leaves, inconspicuous summer flowers grow in spikelike drooping or erect clusters. Perfect for dry, exposed sites. Their tough, heavy, close-grained wood is used for fence posts and for the handles of small tools. |

The young shoots and leaves on this rare shrubby tree are downy.
