Sourwood, Lily of the Valley Tree

Planted singly or among other taller trees, Sourwood stands out in every season. In summer, white bell-shaped flowers bloom among their glossy leaves. In fall, their leaves turn scarlet and the branches are covered with yellow to brown fruits. After leaves drop, dark, deeply furrowed winter bark is visible. Start from seeds or cuttings. They need moist, acid soil. Mulch to keep soil moist and to protect fibrous roots. Shelter from wind. Will not tolerate pollution. Transplant in spring.

Its leaves turn maroon to purple in fall. Flower clusters grow 10 inches or more. For best autumn color, plant in full sun and water regularly. Do not plant in lawns or near other competitive trees.
