Shade is a must for these 6- to 10-inch-high evergreens, because the spoon-shaped leaves yellow in the sun. Leaves usually green, but variegated types also available. Spikes of fragrant flowers open early in spring followed by small, whitish berries. Good in edging and around house foundation. Deer-resistant. Easily started from cuttings taken in summer and planted in half sand, half soil, or division. Water frequently until established. Fertilize during the growing season. Watch for scale, leaf blight canker disease and, in wet soils, root rot. |
