Papaver orientale 'Pizzicato Mixed'

Oriental Poppy

The only widely-grown perennial poppy, the Oriental Poppy's large, brightly colored flowers are truly astounding. Thin, satiny petals form cup-shaped single or double flowers up to 6 inches across. Gardeners in Zones 2 through 7 are the lucky ones who can grow this tall beauty for use in borders and as cut flowers. In warmer climates, the flowers do not open properly. These poppies have a relatively short bloom period, so fill the gap they leave with Baby's Breath (Gypsophila) or other late-blooming, billowy perennials. Check out a new type called 'Minicap' which has a much longer blooming season and better heat tolerance. Sold in containers in fall or spring, they breed by root cuttings. Grown from seed, plants have slightly different characteristics from their parents. To use as cut flowers, sear the cut ends with a flame, then place in water.
