Penstemon 'Prairie Dusk'

Beard Tongue

Colorful Beard Tongues vary from small, rock-garden-sized plants to tall, floppy, shrublike plants. Tubular flowers of red, purple, pink, white, a rare yellow, and the much-sought-after blue attract hummingbirds. The 250 species are mostly native to western North American deserts, mountains, plains and forests. Some varieties are easy to find locally. Buy other, more unusual types at nurseries specializing in mountain and plains plants. Care and growing needs differ, though all like full sun and fast drainage. Plants usually die after 3 to 4 years, and some species may die faster if grown in too-rich, well-watered soil. Many are easy from seed, while others are best bought in containers during your growing season.
