| Their succulent leaves on bright raspberry-red stems run a gamut of forms -- quilted, wrinkled, or smooth, solid, marbled or striped, in creamy whites and greens pale to nearly black. Popular houseplants, they can summer outdoors, or provide year-round borders and ground covers in subtropic and tropic gardens. Tiny flower stalks like mouse tails appear in spring. Peperomia fraseri's more showy white flower spikes resemble Mignonettes. Need bright indirect light with shade from intense sun, and moderate humidity. The solid green-leaved types can take more sun. Plant in fibrous, well-drained but moisture-retentive soil. Let dry somewhat between thorough soakings. Water less in winter, keeping soil just moist. Most prefer a day range of 70º to 80º F, nights from 60º to 70º F. Cuttings root easily. Divide the crowns of mature plants in early spring. |
Metallic black accents the fleshy, corrugated leaves. Named cultivars offer different leaf and stem colors.
