Phlomis fruticosa

Jerusalem Sage

Though commonly called Sages, do not confuse these ornamentals with the true culinary sages, Salvia. Grow these for their appealing woolly leaves and whorls of flowers -- white, yellow, pink, purple, or lavender -- borne at intervals on tall 4-sided stems. Their sturdy charm suits informal and native gardens. Ground-hugging types with short flower stems, like Phlomis rotata, brighten a rocky terrace. Best in a sunny Mediterranean climate, they do not mind poor soil if it is well-drained. Give a little water in long hot spells. Trim faded flower stalks and straggly growth. Easy to grow from seed, cuttings, or division.
