Phoenix dactylifera

Date Palm

These large, slow-growing palms have erect trunks topped with an umbrella of arching, feather-shaped, coarse, leathery leaves. Trunks become patterned with the bases of old leaf stalks. Clusters of summer flowers are followed by sometimes edible fruits among green or gray-green leaves. Like plenty of moisture, but tolerate some drought once established.
Phoenix dactylifera, Date Palm
Tasty sweet dates like those found in markets grow in huge clusters after the yellowish brown flowers have gone. Remove suckers from base to produce one trunk. Watch for mess when squirrels steal the fruit.
