Phormium colensoi

Mountain Lily, Phormium cookianum

A highly variable group of large leafed perennials with varying heights and leaf colors. Phormiums tolerate a wide range of soil types, heat or coastal winds, drought or damp locations. Leaf colors intensify during the cooler months of the year. Leaves are valued in floral displays. Propagated by division.

Also sold as P. colensoi, it is smaller than P. tenax, with more pliant, arching leaves tinged red at the base. After flowers bloom, long, twisted seed capsules dangle from the stems. Colorfully striped hybrids may revert to green, are not as hardy in extreme temperatures.
