Protea compacta

Protea

These 1000 species of flowering evergreen trees and shrubs are known for their large thistle-shaped flowers. Their tubular blooms are surrounded by colorful bracts. They have leathery leaves and a bearded nut. Native to South Africa, these short-lived plants need just the right growing conditions. Plant in full sun on slopes with excellent drainage. Most prefer acid soil. Protect from drying winds. Young plants are especially tender, while older plants tolerate some low temperatures. Grow smaller types in containers.
