| Popular Ferns with simple, palm-like fronds, they range from diminutive species, perfect for dish gardens or small containers, to plants of landscape size. Their tolerance of heated rooms once earned them the name Stove Fern. While most require typical Fern conditions -- shade, humidity, and moist soil -- Pteris vittata is an oddity, happy among Cacti and succulents. Even the shade-lovers like plenty of indirect light, so do not plant them under dense low branches. Species and varieties with creamy white markings are especially attractive. Fertilize established plants every 2 weeks with diluted liquid fertilizer, spring through fall. As potted plants age, becoming tough and woody with sparser fronds, replace with a new young plant. |
