These fast-growing shrubs are grown for their colorful fruit, evergreen foliage, hardiness and ease of care. Clusters of fragrant white flowers mass at the ends of last year's branches. Some types are ground covers, while others can be trained to grow up a wall, fence or trellis. Use as background or screen plants. Birds like the berries. Watch out for stiff sharp thorns. Buy plants in fruit to be sure of berry color. Plants under stress susceptible to fireblight, though disease-resistant varieties are available.

One of the hardiest and most widely grown, this species is the best for cold winter climates. Masses of deep orange-red berries follow white flowers. Watch for scab in early spring, it can nearly defoliate shrubs.
