| Want a Cactus with a French connection? These are named for P. Rebut, a 19th century wine-grower and Cactus dealer from the Beaujolais region, who got the first specimen to reach Europe from the Andes. Since four other Cactus groups were recently reclassified as Rebutias, they number several hundred popular species, varieties, and hybrids. Their charming small globes and clusters glisten with fine spines and white down. Colorful blossoms as big as the plant may appear when it is just 3/8 inch wide. The funnel-shaped flowers grow from the base in every color but blue, some with striped petals. Tiny, berrylike fruits hide among the spines, bursting when ripe. The scattered seeds sprout and grow quickly. Small size and energetic self-propagation make them a great choice for newcomers to Cactus-rearing. Give them a sunny, airy spot and ensure good drainage with soil at least 50% sand or grit. Flowers may not open completely without full sun. Keep dry from fall to early spring, except for a light misting on warmer days. Keep winter temperatures between 37º to 46º F. If warmer, they will not produce as many buds. All, especially the young, are susceptible to red spider mites. |
Furry white spines cover these clusters of pincushions, and their tiny brownish fruits. Fresh orange flowers sometimes bloom into autumn.
