Rhodohypoxis baurii

| Not well-known in the United States, the single species produces masses of starry white, pink or rose red flowers, nearly hiding the short hairy leaf blades. It grows from a bulblike tuber that becomes covered over time with the bristly bases of old leaves. Named varieties have larger flowers in distinctive shades. Rhodohypoxis baurii platypatela (sometimes given species status as Rhodohypoxis platypatera) has pure white flowers. Dormant in winter. Somewhat finicky, they demand full sun, mild temperatures, and porous, peaty, lime-free soil kept moist in summer, nearly dry in winter. Will not tolerate extreme heat or cold, or wet winters. Where conditions are not ideal, grow in pots that can be moved as needed. Repot or transplant after growth starts, not when dormant. Grow varieties by division, as plants from seed may revert to the species' flower colors. |
