These trees are as tough as they are beautiful. They tolerate dry heat, steep slopes and poor soil. They thrive along roadsides and highway banks. They also have graceful feathery leaves, and opulent, long, hanging clusters of white or pink pea-shaped blossoms. Flowers yield flattened brown or nearly black pods. Excellent fall color. Drought-tolerant once established. Start from seed, cuttings, suckers and division. Shallow roots are aggressive and sucker if disturbed. Transplant easily. Prone to borers, the carpenter worm and leaf miner. |

White, fragrant spring flowers hang in 4 to 8-inch-long clusters. The 2 to 4-inch-long pods last through much of the winter, rattling in the breeze as they dry. Highly prone to insect damage.
