These summer-flowering, woody perennials and deciduous subshrubs need a sunny, sheltered location and deep well-drained soil. They are difficult to establish, but once established spread rapidly. Frost hardy. Difficult to transplant, except root suckers.

The fragrant blooms of the 'Queen of the California Wildflowers' can be 9 inches wide. Its crepe-like white petals and yellow center give it the look of a large fried egg. Competitive with less vigorous plants.
