| Much-loved aromatic plants, the perennial and shrubby Sages are grown for their huge variety of flower colors and their long bloom. Colors include bright red, true blue, white, orange, purple, lavender and pink. The dried leaves of many types are used as cooking spices. Species come from many places in the world, so care needs vary widely -- some prefer heat, sun and dry conditions, while others need shade and moist conditions. Native to dry chaparral slopes and coastal scrublands, it is developed a silvery fuzz to protect itself from sun and wind. Lavender-flecked white flowers bloom on upright spikes.
