Native to woodlands of the eastern United States, these pyramidal trees are grown for their light green foliage, fall color and bright fruit. Clusters of greenish-yellow flowers attract birds and butterflies. All parts of these drought-tolerant trees are spicy and aromatic. Though once used as a home remedy, tea made from its root bark is toxic. Prefer a warm, sunny, slightly sheltered location. Easy to grow in most soils, they prefer acid, loamy soil. Spread by suckers to form a colony. Long tap roots make older trees difficult to transplant. |

Becomes rounded and irregular with age. Green twigs and branching limbs create a candelabra-like winter silhouette. In fall, leaves turn golden, red and purple. Fruit is deep blue with red stalks. Though disease resistant, it is prone to Japanese beetles.
