Schizachyrum scoparium 'Albus'

Little Bluestem, Prairie Beard Grass, Broom Sedge

Of some 100 species, 11 of these hardy, attractive perennial grasses are native to the United States. They tend to grow in clumps on dry prairies, and to form areas of sod in wet boggy areas. Some are nicknamed Beardgrass for the pale, fuzzy seedheads that grow on branching flower stalks. The slender leaves turn pale chestnut or bronze in fall. Plant in porous, sandy soil where they will get full sun. Once established they fend for themselves. Though somewhat drought-tolerant, in natural habitat they may not bloom in dry years.

This silvery-blue cultivar turns bronze to brilliant orange in fall. Purple flower spikes last from summer through winter, good for fresh or dried arrangements. Produces a thick turf over the years. Needs good drainage. Water in dry spells for a better appearance.
