Sequoia sempervirens

Redwood

The only member of the genus is Sequoia sempervirens, the giant conifer known as the Redwood. Coast Redwoods, the tallest of all trees, commonly reach more than 300 feet in their native Pacific Coast range. They live extremely long -- some California specimens are more than 3000 years old -- and require little care in moist air and soil. Their shallow fibrous root systems compete for moisture and nutrients. No serious pest or disease problems. Resist oak root fungus.

Its deep green, flat needles are arranged in flat sprays. Fire-retardant, reddish brown bark covers its thick trunk. Yellow leaves in summer indicate iron chlorosis.
