This is a group of clumping bamboos. Young stalks (culms) typically have a white or gray powder below the nodes, plus many branches. Leaves are checkered or marked with a grid of small squares. They come from China and the Himalayas.

Culms are often purple with several branches at each node. Branch stalks are deep purple and leaves are small, pointed, and green.
