These slow-growing dwarf shrubs are popular for their glossy green leaves and red hollylike berries that last into winter. Their pinkish buds become tiny white flowers in late spring. Plant in partial shade as borders, near foundations or in containers. Tolerate moderate air pollution. Prefer moist, acid loam and partial shade. Start from seeds or cuttings.

This dense shrub has pale, yellow-green leaves, scarlet berries and fragrant flowers. For fruit production, plant a male pollinator near a female. A type of this shrub also produces ivory berries. In northern climates, give winter protection. Watch for mites in dry climates.
