| Once and for all, Goldenrods do not cause hay fever! They have earned a bad reputation by blooming at the peak of allergy season alongside real culprits such as Ragweed. They do deserve their reputation for spreading aggressively, but growers have developed more docile hybrids and cultivars. They retain their wild parents' vigor, but show less invasive spreading. Those developed in Europe behave best. They handle a wide range of habitats, from dry sandy soils to damp meadows and watersides. Plant with Daisies and Asters in borders, meadows and naturalized gardens for a cheerful display of color, from late summer well into fall. Some make fine cut flowers. Though considered perennials, a few species such as Solidago nemoralis, last only 2 or 3 years. Smaller cultivars include the 1-foot-tall Golden Dwarf and Queenie (or Golden Thumb), with variegated gold and green leaves. Super reaches 4 feet tall. Praecox, 1½ feet tall, flowers early. Solidago bicolor blooms in creamy white. Solidago odora tolerates poor sandy soil, has long-lasting flowers and anise-scented leaves. Solidago riddellii prefers damp meadows and watersides. Most like full sun. Some, such as Solidago speciosa and Solidago caesia, thrive in partial shade. Best in low- to moderately-fertile soil. Too much nourishment encourages rampant growth. Grow species from seed, but divide hybrids; though they may self-sow, offspring lose parents' hybrid characteristics. Can also root tip cuttings in spring, basal cuttings in fall. |
A compact and colorful hybrid with golden flowers, it makes a finer garden plant than taller natives that may be out of scale in home gardens. Best in organic rich soil and full sun. Excellent for cutting.
